MD Q&A
Why Did You Become a Fertility Expert?
I studied neuroscience in graduate school, so I assumed I would go into neurology or neurosurgery, but they really didn’t appeal to me in the same way as obstetrics and gynecology. When I saw my first delivery, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. It was absolutely incredible. Given my neuroscience background, I found reproductive endocrinology allowed me to continue to think about how the brain and pituitary work.
Have Any Patients Truly Inspired You?
There are many stories! I think the first in this field was a patient I met when I was a resident. She was brought in by ambulance obtunded with heavy bleeding and her husband said she was pregnant. She had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. She went to the ICU after surgery, and I was not sure she would survive. Thankfully she did. It took her a while to try to conceive again. She became my patient when I was an attending physician, and she did in vitro fertilization (IVF) and was successful.
What is Your Approach to Patient Care?
Seeking care with a reproductive endocrinologist is difficult on so many levels, no matter what the reason. I’ve found through the years that listening is key. Sometimes people have other factors in their lives that are also weighing them down, and it is important to acknowledge those things.
Who is Your Inspiration?
All of my patients! Also, my sister. She was the first person I knew who struggled with infertility and recurrent miscarriage. She is 14 years older than I am. When I was a child, she had 4 miscarriages, a stillborn, and finally a baby boy. She was so strong and endured so much. I couldn’t really understand it then but looking back I can see how incredible she is.
How Would You Describe Your Personality?
Quiet. Honest. Determined. I like to laugh.
Where is The One Place You'd Like to Visit?
There are lots of places I would like to travel and see but my real goal is to own a farm one day.
How Do You Spend Your Free Time?
I love to cook and I love to feed people. I run and bicycle to get outside and let go of any stress. I like to draw and read. I like walking my dog and spending time with my children, family and friends.
