Why Did You Become a Fertility Expert?
I decided to focus on infertility for a couple of reasons, the most compelling of which was that my parents had gone through it. Throughout my childhood and young adulthood, they both spoke of the emotional anguish and pain they endured to bring my sister and I into the world. I had also always wanted to be a pioneer in the field of health psychology/behavioral medicine and when I was doing my post-doctoral work, there was no one doing research in infertility. So I was able to follow my personal passion because of what my mom went through and my professional dream of helping people in a unique way.
What About Boston IVF Makes You Proud?
Boston IVF is one of the only, if not the only, infertility center which contains a scientifically-validated integrative care center. Boston IVF patients are able to avail themselves not only of the most cutting-edge medical and surgical treatments, but also the most well researched and efficacious approaches to treating and preventing emotional distress as well as enhancing pregnancy rates. We provide comprehensive care to our patients, which is so rare. A patient can literally see her physician, an acupuncturist, and listen to our relaxation CD, all within an hour. A patient in crisis can be seen by a psychologist within minutes.
What is Your Approach to Patient Care?
Well, in my opinion everyone who is experiencing infertility is struggling in some way. It can be a very challenging process. My approach is for us to offer a wide variety of services which we know can improve physical and emotional health while at the same time increasing the chance of conceiving a healthy baby.
Have Any Patients Truly Inspired You?
I am inspired by every single one of my patients. I learn from my patients every day, and hopefully they learn from me. The strength they demonstrate to pursue their goal of parenthood is amazing. There are of course some, even ones from 20 years ago, whom I think about frequently. I see miracles every day, and I don't forget them.
How Do You Spend Your Free Time?
I love to bake sweets and bread, love to travel, read, watch the Patriots, and go to as many of my daughters' soccer games as possible. They are both goalies so I get pretty anxious for every game.
Where is the One Place You'd Like to Visit?
I think the top of my bucket list is a trip to the Galapagos. I love watching wildlife and love being on boats.
What Music Do You Enjoy Listening To?
The first dance at my wedding was a U2 song so they are still tops for me. Second is probably Adele. Although she is a very close second. She is amazing.
How Would You Describe Your Personality?
Highly extroverted! Very compassionate and caring. Probably too sensitive.
