Restorative Yoga at the Domar Center

ImageYoga consists of simple physical postures, breath awareness and relaxation techniques that can reduce the daily stress we place on our minds and bodies. The practice of yoga can lead to improved strength, coordination and relaxation.

At the Domar Center for Mind/Body Health, we teach yoga that focuses on the breath and restorative postures, which can help participants release deep layers of tension.

We make special modifications for those in physical pain and for those undergoing fertility treatment. This type of yoga works subtly, yet profoundly from the inside of the body out.

The series of yoga classes we teach are gentle and thus suitable for all levels.

WHAT IS RESTORATIVE YOGA?

Resorative yoga is a quiet, effortless form of yoga. All postures are done lying down, supported by props such as blankets and bolsters. There is no muscular effort, so the body can relax and release physical and emotional tension.

WHAT CAN ONE EXPECT FROM A RESTORATIVE YOGA SESSION?

You will learn yoga postures and breathing techniques that relax the body, calm the mind, soothe the nervous system and nourish the reproductive organs.

HOW DOES RESTORATIVE YOGA HELP WITH INFERTILITY?

Restorative yoga can help to lessen the emotional stresses of the infertility process by giving you the tools to quiet negative thoughts and feel more in control. Slowing and focusing on the breath creates a state of inner awareness and a deep sense of peace. Meanwhile, supported yogo postures gently stretch and relax muscles and connective tissue, increasing blood flow to the pelvis and reproductive organs.

Many women's health issues are closely linked to the brain and the nervous system, and as such are affected by stress. Restorative yoga helps to reduce stress, which lowers blood levels of the hormone Cortisol. High levels of Cortisol may interfere with reproductive hormone function. In studies, yoga and meditation have also been shown to lower blood pressure, elevate brain levels of gamma-amino butyric acid (a brain chemical that is low in people with depression), and create significant improvements in people's sense of well-being.

WHAT IF I'M NOT FLEXIBLE?

You don't need to be able to fold yourself into a ptretzel to practice restorative yoga! All poses are individually tailored and fully supported.

WHAT IF I'VE NEVER PRACTICED YOGA BEFORE?

Restorative yoga is appropriate for people of all levels.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

We recommend starting with at least 4 sessions -- to teach your bopdy and mind to let go and develop a customized sequence that you can practice at home for optimal results.
